Beermen optimistic in the upcoming PBA seasonWith three new players in its fold, San Miguel Beer (formerly Magnolia Beverage Masters) is ready to contend anew in the pro league, starting with the Philippine Cup starting this Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen recently acquired three vital players in Mick Pennisi, Jay Washington and Bonbon Custodio who are considered by the coaching staff, led by head coach Siot Tanquincen, as what the doctor ordered in the team’s quest for its 18th PBA title.
After coming up short in its bid to reach the final of the recent Fiesta Conference, San Miguel shopped around for players who can give the team extra kick and found what it was looking for in the trio.
The 6-foot11 Pennisi, at 33, remains a feared and hard-nosed defender. Acquired from Red Bull, Pennisi has vowed to bring his brand of smart play into the San Miguel Beer system.
"I’m not at all athletic and we know that athleticism just comes and goes. Although I’m not a high scorer, I can hit open shots, set good screens," said the Fil-Australian.
The 6-foot-8 Washington, formerly with Talk N Text, is ready to start all over again with the Beermen.
"My huge smile should tell you that I’m very happy to be with San Miguel. I haven’t had my A game after I was drafted and it was truly frustrating," said the 26-year-old who looks to play a lot more pesky defense, block shots and make the right passes.
While Pennisi and Washington bring size to the team, Custodio brings quickness, shooting and ability to penetrate. "I just want to play my best game with San Miguel. I have to do justice to being a San Miguel Beerman," he said.
With the trio in the fold, the Beermen are ready to kick into high gear a run-and-gun game, according to veteran guard Olsen Race, an optimism shared by Tanquincen.
"I believe we can do it. In the international arena, that’s the prevailing trend. It is just a matter of adjustment for some of the players who are used to a half-court set," Tanquincen said.
Racela will continue to play major minutes but will also play a key role in guiding the young players, particularly Marc Pingris and Jonas Villanueva, who are still fitting into Tanquincen’s scheme of things.
The team veterans also have some adjusting to do. Dorian Pena will have Ken Bono and Pennisi joining him at the post. Danny Seigle, Lordy Tugade and Dondon Hontiveros can expect an extra hand in scoring from Custodio.
Mike Cortez is already part of a formidable three-guard combo that includes Racela and Villanueva. Wesley Gonzales and Chris Calaguio remain dependable defensive players off the bench.
Although former MVP Danny Ildefonso and Samigue Eman are in sick bay, the Beermen can hold the fort, according to Tanquincen.
"Our morale is really good and you can see it in practice. It’s actually a long process. With our lineup, we expect to be called favorites again just like last year. We were able to balance the team with our new acquisitions. It’s our chance to prove that we’re really the favorites," Tanquincen said. http://pbanews.blogspot.com/2008/10/beermen-optimistic-in-upcoming-pba.html

So who's OUT with San Miguel. As I knew, 3 were IN ( Mick Pennissi, Anthony Washington and rookie Bon2x Custodio). I only heared Chester Tolomia was out. Which means, 3 IN's and only 1 out. Sobra na pala sila sa players. Any other Beermen out?

Masyado naman atang exaggerated ang mga height nina Pennissi at Washington. Mick is not 6-11. di nga ata siya aabot ng 6-9 though he's listed like that in the PBA. Same with Washington, he'll too short to be at 6-8. maybe nasa 6-6 nga lang ata cya.

If I'm not mistaken Chester is the only one who is out, they try to trade Wesley to Purefoods pero umayaw yata 'yung conduit team. So far this will be our line-up.. Peña, Pennisi, Pingris, Washington, Bono, Seigle, Gonzales, Hontiveros, Calaguio, Custodio, Cortez, Racela, Villanueva..while Tugade, Eman, and Ildefonso are in the injured list?

So nasa injured list pala sina Danny I, Tugade and Eman. Which means eksakto pa rin ang line up nila. Walang nasa reserved list. Kaso pag back in harness na ang tatlo, sigurado mag malalagay sa reseved list nito!

Unheralded Beermen leave Cone, Aces shaken
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BY NOLI CORTEZ

HAVING two relatively less heralded players leading an ambush against his tested team was something Alaska coach Tim Cone cannot fathom.
That’s exactly what almost happened last Sunday, leaving the usually amiable mentor shaken despite the fact the Aces got away with an 85-84 escape against the San Miguel Beermen in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Astrodome.
"If I had a gun I would have shot (Bonbon) Custodio, the son-of-a-gun," Cone blurted out during the post-game interview, using a light-hearted jab in trying to hide his frayed nerves on the heels of the intense game.
Of course, he was referring to the SMB rookie who helped spearhead the Beermen’s blistering start, but he might as well also have had sophomore Jonas Villanueva in his crosshairs.
The two guards combined for 12 of the Beermen’s first 16 points before Custodio and Danny Seigle extended San Miguel’s lead to as many as 19 points.
"We were really shell-shocked when Custodio and Villanueva came out and hit those shots in the (early goings)," Cone added, obviously having regained his bearings.
"At the end of the first and start of the second (quarter) it looked like we got smacked around," he said. "We didn’t anticipate that and I’m not sure even San Miguel anticipated that, all that great shooting from those guys."
But the Aces did recover, cutting the deficit to just 39-48 at the half and to an even manageable 59-63 going into the last 12 minutes of play.
"We played very passive and careful at the beginning and I think we lost a bit of our energy level at that point," Cone explained. "Then we made a good fight back at the end of the second (quarter) that gave us the momentum coming into the third."
The Aces finally took the lead at 65-63 on back-to-back three-pointers by Jeffrey Cariaso and Larry Fonacier to start the final canto.
"We got the lead and did a pretty good job holding on to it, making the extra passes, hitting those big shots and getting those rebounds," noted Cone.
Two-time MVP Willie Miller had a game-high 17 points but almost became the goat when he failed to buy a basket in the final minute, missing two triple tries and a drive. But he came up with a crucial loose ball recovery off two charity misses by Cariaso near the end to help seal the deal.
Center Sonny Thoss, desperately fouled by an SMB defender with five-tenths of a second left, missed the front end of his charities and deliberately bungled his second shot for the final count.
"I told my team we’ve got to be the No. 1 free throw shooting in the league this year. I don’t think that’s gonna happen," said Cone, noting his team finished with a 6-of-13 shooting from the stripe.
The loss should rankle at SMB more.
The Beermen seemed sure on their way to living up to their ranking as among the pre-season favorites but couldn’t make the plays that mattered most in the end.
Custodio finished with a team-high 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the two-point area, with Dorian Pena adding 13 points and Dondon Hontiveros 11.
Villanueva had all of his 10 points in the first quarter, where he went 2-of-2 from three-point land, 1-of-1 from the two-point zone and 2-of-2 from the stripe. He preserved that perfect stint by not attempting a basket the rest of the way.
Jay Washington, acquired from Talk N Text for SMB’s third overall draft pick rights, only had three points but did have eight rebounds and two steals.
More modest was the output of last year’s top overall pick, Joe Devance, who only had two points and four rebounds.
But Cone maintained the 6-foot-7 forward could only get better.
"I think he got a little bit of nerves, wanted to do a lot of things and basically set a lot of expectations on himself today," reasoned Cone.

Ang lupit ni Bonbon! Sharpshooter ang batang to at walang takot tumira.
Kelangan pa nyang hasain ang slashing skills nya kc malimit syang nabangga sa depensa ng Aces kahapon.

I hardly expect a non first pick rookie to score in double figures in his debut game. Keep it up Bon.

That's a very flattering comment for the two (Jonas and Bonbon) coming from Coach Tim Cone. We all expected magtutuloy tuloy yun the entire game. Sayang yung momentum ng dalawa. As usual alam nyo na nangyari. Hope the next game, pag ganun kaganda ang laro, ibalik agad hanggang mainit, sayang ganadong ganado. Bagong 2 guard attack sana ng SMB yung dalawa. Even si Olsen mabangko, i guess natutuwa syang panoorin yung dalawa.
Good luck beermen.
